Alcino Soutinho

Alcino Peixoto de Castro Soutinho (1930-2013) completed the degree in Architecture in 1959 at ESBAP, where he initially entered as a student of Sculpture and to which he later returned as a professor. He collaborated in several architecture offices and in Fundação das Caixas de Previdência, but soon became autonomous and worked as an independent professional. He left for Italy in 1961, on a journey financed by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, to undertake research on museum spaces, an interest that, together with intervention on architectural heritage, he would maintain and be reflected in his intense architectural production. Soutinho is the author of publicly recognized projects in this area, such as the building of the Amadeo de Souza Cardoso Library-Museum in Amarante (1977 – AICA Prize), the restoration of the Castle of Vila Nova de Cerveira (1982 – Europa Nostra Prize), the Museum of Neo-Realism in Vila Franca de Xira (2001), and the Guerra Junqueiro House-Museum in Porto.
A man of causes and with a strong sense of citizenship, he participated in the SAAL urban movement and became the author of the first municipal building designed after 1974 in Matosinhos. He also participated actively in the debate and dissemination of architecture and hold important positions in institutions such as the Portuguese Design Center (1998-2001), Cooperativa Árvore (2003-2006) and the Portuguese Order of Architects (1999-2002). His work is characterized by a strong structural and constructive rigor, based on a contemporary, discreet, but solid and affirmative architectural language, with a great sense of urbanity and attention to the place.
