Álvaro Lapa

Born in Évora, Portugal in 1939, Álvaro Lapa died in 2006. He was a painter/writer and one of the great names of contemporary Portuguese painting.
He received several awards throughout his career, namely the EDP Grand Prize.
There are those who argue that his work is autobiographical, and that it cannot be fitted into only one or any “ism”. Over time, a strong relationship between literature and painting was developed in his work.
Álvaro Lapa held his first exhibition at Galeria 111 of Manuel de Brito, in Lisbon, and since then his activity was constant. With numerous exhibitions in Portugal and abroad, he established himself as one of the most important painters of the second half of the 20th century. In 1976, he became a professor at the School of Fine Arts of Porto. He participated in several editions of the Cerveira International Art Biennale.
