Elsa César

Born in Porto, Portugal in 1953, Gerardo Burmester currently lives and works at this city. He attended the School of Fine Arts of Porto between 1973 and 1974. From 1975 to 1978, he lived and worked in Paris. He was part of the Grupo Puzzle [Puzzle Group] (1977-1980). With Albuquerque Mendes, he founded and directed the “Associação/Galeria Espaço Lusitano”, in Porto. With his creation of installations of blatant aesthetics and experimental originality, Burmester’s work is today one of the most significant in the context of Portuguese contemporary art within the generation of artists that emerged in the 1980s. He is represented in several private and private collections, in the country and abroad.
He won the Grand Prize at the VIII Cerveira International Art Biennale (1995).
