Gerardo Burmester

Born in Porto, Portugal, in 1953, the city where he currently lives and works. Attended the Escola Superior de Belas-Artes do Porto between 1973 and 1974. Lived and worked in Paris from 1975 to 1978. Was part of the Puzzle Group (1977-1980). With Albuquerque Mendes, he founded and directed the “Associação/Galeria Espaço Lusitano” in Oporto. Burmester’s work is today one of the most significant in the context of contemporary Portuguese art, in the generation of artists which emerged in the 1980s, producing installations of flagrant aesthetic and experimental originality. He is represented in various private and private collections in Portugal and abroad.
He was awarded the Grand Prize at the VIII Cerveira International Art Biennial (1995).
