José Aurélio

José Aurélio was born in Alcobaça, Portugal, in 1938, and attended the course of Sculpture at the School of Fine Arts of Lisbon. In 1970 he created Galeria Ogiva, in Óbidos, which he directed until 1974, and in 1980 he moved to Alcobaça, where he currently lives and works and where he directs Armazém das Artes – Fundação Cultural since 2007. His work, inspired by themes often taken from Poetry and Literature, focuses mainly on sculpture and medals, in which he has been developing new forms of expression since 1966. He is also the author of a vast set of sculptures in public spaces of different cities in Portugal. Working with materials such as wood, stone, bronze, wire, glass or concrete, and above all with painted iron and with steel, the sculptor creates structures based on a minimalist esthetic, with shapes and volumes that are usually geometric and spatially organized according to a rigorous discipline that always aims at creating a relationship between the sculpture and the space in which it will be inserted, as well as with the spectator who is invited to interact with it.
