Justino Alves

Born in Porto, Portugal in 1940, Justino Alves died in 2015. He obtained a degree in Painting from the School of Fine Arts of Porto (currently Faculty of Fine Arts). He received grants from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and from the Ventura Terra legacy.
He was a professor and director of the Academia de Belas-Artes [Fine Arts Academy] of Funchal from 1968 to 1970. He returned to the mainland in 1971 to teach at the School of Fine Arts of Lisbon.
His career as an artist was developed alongside his career as a teacher, showing his work in more than 20 solo and 60 collective exhibitions and receiving several national and foreign awards.
As a fellow of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, he spent two years in Paris. He returned to Portugal in 1978 and collaborated in several editions of the Cerveira International Art Biennale.
