Sérgio Fernandez

Sérgio Fernandez was born in Porto in 1937. He attended the course of Architecture at ESBAP [School of Fine Arts of Porto], having participated, while still a student, at CIAM in Otterloo in 1959. He was a professor at ESBAP, at the course of Architecture of the University of Minho and at FAUP [Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto], where he taught until 2006 and held various executive roles. During the 1970s and 1980s he conducted seminars in the International Course on Housing Planning and Building at Bowcentrum, Rotterdam (1977-1983), he taught at the Department of Architecture of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Angola (1981), he was invited by the State Academy of Fine Arts from Tbilisi, Georgia, to teach at the International Students Practical Seminar (“Artist and the City Environment”) (1988), and participated in the Seminar “Design Management” organized by the University of Industrial Arts in Helsinki, Finland (1989). The following decade, he joined the “One Day Conference on Post Graduate Architectural Education, a Meeting for European Architectural School Representatives”, at the Berlage Institute, in Amsterdam (1993), conducted a course on Portuguese Contemporary Architecture at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of São Paulo and gave lectures at the Faculties of Architecture of the universities of Belém do Pará, Fortaleza and Rio de Janeiro (1994); attended the International Meeting “L’Architecture e il suo Insegnamento: Prospettive del Mestiere e della Scuola”, organized by the Dipartimento di Projettazione dell’ Architettura – Politecnico di Milano; led the Portuguese delegation that integrated the work of the European Community-MED-CAMPUS-AMIE program at the Architectuurinstituut, in Rotterdam (1995), and directed a team at the Citemor 96 Architecture Workshop in Montemor-o-Velho (1996). With regard to the professional practice of Architecture, throughout his career he collaborated with Viana de Lima and Arménio Losa, later starting an autonomous career. He co-authored several projects with Pedro Ramalho and founded, with Alexandre Alves Costa, Atelier 15. From his vast, awarded and largely published work, the following stands out: the Residential Buildings of Pasteleira in Porto (1965), in partnership with Pedro Ramalho, the Casa de Caminha [House in Caminha] or Vill’ Alcina (1971-1973), the Operation SAAL at Bairro Leal, in Rua das Musas, Porto (1974-1978), the Moledo Tourist Complex (1980), the Moledo Children’s Garden (1988), the Student Residence in Lisbon, Expo’98 (1996-1998); and works in co-authorship with Alves Costa, such as the Study for the Restoration and Heritage Valuation of the Village of Idanha-a-Velha (last 15 years), the restoration of the Constantino Nery Movie-Theater in Matosinhos (opened in 2008), the Residential Complex of Viana do Castelo (2005) and the intervention in the Convent of Santa Clara-a-Velha, in Coimbra (opened in 2009). He is also the author of several articles and the book Percurso da Arquitectura Portuguesa 1930-1974 [Path of the Portuguese Architecture 1930-1974]. He was, together with Alexandre Alves Costa, distinguished with the AICA 2008 Prize, for the quality of the work built and for the excellence of the pedagogical activity developed by both.
