The collection of the Nadir Afonso Contemporary Art Museum (MACNA) includes works by several Portuguese artists, namely Nadir Afonso, Ema Berta, João Machado, Carlos Barreira, Carlos Pinheiro, João Ribeiro, Cristina Valadas, João Cutileiro, Peter Rosman, Teresa Magalhães, among others.
The works that make up the MACNA collection result from offers, deposits and protocols established with several entities, namely the Nadir Afonso Foundation.

Nadir Afonso

(Chaves, 1920 – Cascais, 2013) – A leading figure of geometric abstractionism in Portugal. After the war, he collaborated with Le Corbusier, in Paris, and with Óscar Niemeyer, in Brazil. In 1965, he abandoned architecture to focus on painting. He achieved international recognition, being represented in several public and private collections.

Ema Berta

(Sintra, 1944 – Cascais, 2021) – Her work is widely recognized in the context of Portuguese painting of the late 20th century and beginning of the 21st century. She developed a pictorial language based on vigorous chromatic strokes and characterized by a type of new figuration influenced by expressionism.

João Machado

(Coimbra, 1942) – Designer, illustrator and sculptor, stands apart because of the originality of his graphic language. He participates in several exhibitions that have brought him many national and international prizes, including the Icograda Excellence Award in 1999, as well as the title of Design Master by Graphis.
