Curated by Francesco Dal Co and Nuno Graça Moura, the exhibition “Souto Moura: Memória, Projectos, Obras” offers a unique and rare monographic reading of the work of one of the most prestigious Portuguese architects.

The exhibition, which was on display from October 2019 to March 2021, is the first interpretation extracted from the enormous collection that the architect deposited at Casa da Arquitectura in May 2019, consisting of 604 models, around 8500 drawn pieces and all the textual and photographic documentation that complements the projects.

Integrating approximately 40 projects, the exhibition has “invaded” the Casa da Arquitectura: it occupies the exhibition nave with 950 square metres and the House Gallery with 150 square metres. The exhibition material, all original and for the most part never exhibited, is presented strictly as it appears in the Casa da Arquitectura’s Archive, without manipulation or omission.

This exhibition and respective catalogue – published by Casa da Arquitectura and Yale University Press in the PT and EN versions, and by Electa in the Italian version – have an eminently documental purpose, opening up the archive to the public, making it available to the most diverse analyses, interpretations and speculations.

The catalogue features as essayists names such as Álvaro Siza, Carlos Machado, Francesco Dal Co, Giovanni Leoni, Jorge Figueira, Nuno Graça Moura and Rafael Moneo, among others.

A vast program of parallel activities, curated by Nuno Sampaio, Francesco Dal Co and Nuno Graça Moura, complements the exhibition, including cycles of conferences and debates with some of the most relevant national and international figures in architecture and other areas, concerts and a set of guided tours, where visitors can experience the work in its entirety.

Eduardo Souto de Moura

Eduardo Souto de Moura was born in Porto on July 25, 1952. He studied at the School of Fine Arts of Porto, where he completed the course of Architecture in 1980. He was the author of numerous works of rehabilitation that focused on properties of great heritage value, the history and the ruin being the raw material for the design of the new project. History and contemporaneity are not mutually exclusive; sometimes they are juxtaposed, other times they are mixed to create a new object that carries within itself all the energy of the past in the affirmation of the present object.

If at the beginning of his career he approached minimalism, with Mies Van der Rohe as a reference, he later experimented with other paths that explored more complex forms, getting closer to Álvaro Siza, his first master.
He has received numerous awards, including the Pritzker Prize in 2011.

Among others, he designed the Centro de Arte Contemporânea Graça Morais in Bragança and, in collaboration with Álvaro Siza, the rehabilitation of the Museu Municipal Abade Pedrosa and the headquarters of the Museu Internacional de Escultura Contemporânea in Santo Tirso.
