The Cerveira Art Biennial Foundation holds an important art collection essentially representative of the artistic production after the revolution of April 25, 1974 and corresponding to the action of the International Art Biennials from 1978 onwards. The collection is constituted mostly from the prizes awarded during the various editions of the biennale and from donations from the artists.

In addition to the periods in which it hosts the exhibitions resulting from the biennale editions, the management of the permanent exhibition space, the Cerveira Cultural Forum, has opted for temporary exhibitions. This program of temporary exhibitions is used to promote new approaches to the collection on a regular basis. However, there is presently no permanent exhibition policy since a new building for the exhibition of the collection on a permanent basis is an objective not yet achieved. However, as a result of digital technologies, the virtual museum of theCerveira Biennial allows the public to discover at all times the works that make up the collection.

Distinguished by the Portuguese Museology Association (APOM) as the “Best Portuguese Museum of 2019”, the Cerveira Biennial Museum opened its doors in 2002, but is the result of a project started in 1978, the year of the creation of the Cerveira Biennial. Managed since 2011 by the Cerveira Biennial Foundation, the Cerveira Biennial Museum has a representative collection of the evolution of Portuguese and international modern and contemporary art over the last 4 decades. In total, the Collection comprises more than 700 works of art, mostly resulting from prizes acquired during the Cerveira Biennials and donations from artists.

Events

Held every two years, the Cerveira Biennial is a unique event in the visual arts scene in Portugal. Since 1978, the event has become a phenomenon of cultural decentralization and internationalization, being the oldest biennale in the Iberian Peninsula.
