Objectives, activities and expected/achieved results

The Northern Regional Directorate for Culture (DRCN) proposes the establishment of a network for cooperation between 13 icons of contemporary art and architecture in the Region as part of a project aimed at developing the offer in the territory, through an integrated plan for joint dissemination and tourism promotion and the implementation of pilot actions, including the development of thematic itineraries and the cross-checking of offers.

It is effectively a question of defining a set of instruments and structuring competences for the promotion of equipment related to contemporary art and architecture throughout the Northern Region, based on some of the most important and recognized cultural assets of the Region and the country, some belonging to the Portuguese Network of Museums and others being buildings that are listed or are in the process of being listed: the Marques da Silva Foundation (Porto); the Casa da Arquitetura (Matosinhos); the Casa do Design (Matosinhos);  the Graça Morais Contemporary Art Center (Bragança); the José De Guimarães International Arts Centre – CIAJG (Guimarães); the Serralves Foundation (Porto);  the Lugar do Desenho — Júlio Resende Foundation (Gondomar); the Municipal Museum Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso (Amarante); Cerveira Biennial Museum (Vila Nova de Cerveira); the Nadir Afonso Museum of Contemporary Art (Chaves); the : Santo Tirso International Museum of Contemporary Sculpture (Santo Tirso); the Museu do Surrealismo: Cupertino de Miranda Foundation (Vila Nova de Famalicão); and the Centro de Arte Oliva (São João da Madeira).

To that extent, the project aims to increase the capacity of the culture of the Northern Region to attract visitors and residents, especially the younger age groups. To achieve this, the following objectives were defined:

a. positioning of the Northern Region as an important center for the production and exhibition of contemporary art and architecture;
b. creation of synergies between the different museum and exhibition spaces capable of multiplying their impact and their ability to attract visitors;
c. adding value to the way the spaces dedicated to contemporary art and architecture are distribution in the territory;
d. integration of a heterogeneous but coherent set of spaces and equipment of high heritage quality, namely: the Marques da Silva Foundation (Porto); the Casa da Arquitetura (Matosinhos); the Casa do Design (Matosinhos);  the Graça Morais Contemporary Art Center (Bragança); the José De Guimarães International Arts Centre – CIAJG (Guimarães); the Serralves Foundation (Porto);  the Lugar do Desenho — Júlio Resende Foundation (Gondomar); the Municipal Museum Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso (Amarante); the Cerveira Biennial Museum (Vila Nova de Cerveira); the Nadir Afonso Museum of Contemporary Art (Chaves); the Santo Tirso International Museum of Contemporary Sculpture (Santo Tirso); the Museu do Surrealismo: Cupertino de Miranda Foundation (Vila Nova de Famalicão); and the Centro de Arte (São João da Madeira).
e. creation of a new dynamism in the territory with actions associated with Contemporary Art and Architecture with international impact in order to project the image of the region and increase its tourism flows;
f. increasing the range and quality of the tourism offer and of the services provided in the facilities that are part of the program by promoting accessibility for people with disabilities on tourism itineraries that are accessible to everyone, namely in terms of communication.
