Architecture
The Casa da Arquitectura – Centro Português de Arquitectura is located in Matosinhos and occupies the block of the Real Vinícola. The buildings now recovered and adapted integrated the old manufacturing facilities built between 1897 and 1901 by the company Menéres & Companhia, for the Real Companhia Vinícola. Resistant to the progressive industrial transformation and residential occupation of the place, its preservation and adaptation is due to its high patrimonial and cultural value. Patrimonially, it is an architectural model of English inspiration and tradition, where the first steam cooperage in the region was located. A branch of the railway line connected it to the docks of the Port of Leixões for shipping and exporting the production. The central patio appears as a Plaza Mayor, qualifying it for collective uses. The building is part of the Urbanization Plan of Matosinhos Sul, by Álvaro Siza.
The Real Vinícola block, recovered by the Matosinhos City Hall and designed by the architect Guilherme Machado Vaz, occupies an area of 4.700 m2. The public areas destined for exhibitions and presentations, with an auditorium, library and shop represent 36% of the space, the conservation and maintenance areas 38% and those for internal management and production 10%. The common uses correspond to 16% of its surface.
