Carlos Barreira

Born in Chaves, Portugal in 1945. During his training at the School of Fine Arts of Porto, Carlos Barreira benefited from a scholarship from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation (1969-1973).
In his artistic career, he received several distinctions: the “Fernando de Castro” Prize, the “Teixeira Lopes” Prize on two occasions and the António de Almeida Foundation Prize.
In 1972 he began his activity as a graphic designer, set designer and costume designer, having worked with Teatro Experimental do Porto [Experimental Theater of Porto]. In 1977, he joined the ESBAP faculty. He is one of the few artists who participated in all editions of the Cerveira International Art Biennale, having won the Grand Prize in its 10th edition (1999).
His sculptural work has been exhibited in Portugal and abroad since the early 1970s, is part of private collections and is on display in public places in Europe and Africa.
