Zulmiro de Carvalho

Born in Gondomar, Portugal in 1940. Zulmiro de Carvalho attended the Soares dos Reis School of Decorative Arts in Porto (1952-1958). He obtained a degree in Sculpture from the School of Fine Arts of Porto in 1968, where he would become a professor (1973-1995).
Between 1971 and 1973 he studied in London at the St. Martin’s School of Art, with a scholarship from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.
The work of the sculptor Zulmiro de Carvalho has received several national awards and has been part of numerous individual and group exhibitions, both in Portugal (Barcelos, Amarante, Braga, Porto, Coimbra, Lisbon, Santo Tirso, Guimarães, etc.), and in symposia and international exhibitions, namely in Madrid, Amsterdam, Bonn, Copenhagen, Goa, and in Brazil (Belém and Rio de Janeiro) and Cape Verde.
He won the Grand Prize in Sculpture at the III Cerveira International Art Biennale (1982).
